A live presentation on the unique history of Richard Etheridge and the Pea Island Life-Savers. Etheridge, a slave taught to read and write, was the nation’s first African American Keeper, and Station Pea Island the only black station in the history of the U.S. Life-Saving Service. Using vivid imagery, reenactment, and interpretation, presenters teach the story of Etheridge’s live, the role surfmen played along the Outer Banks, and about the station’s most famous rescue. Also teaches lessons about the importance of providing equal opportunity to all.
