Top Outer Banks Events for the Week of August 6th

It’s a great time to check out some of the summer event series that the area has to offer.

This is an awesome week for acoustic country and bluegrass music on the Outer Banks. On Thursday, August 9th, the Concerts on the Green Series in Duck presents the Chisman Creek Band out of Tidewater, VA from 6:30-8pm. They have a unique style that blends traditional and contemporary bluegrass and classic rock. Then, on Friday, the Pickin’ on the Porch Concert Series in historic downtown Manteo features The Gravy Boys at 7pm. The Gravy Boys make acoustic Americana music by adding a cup of country, a pinch of roots rock, a handful of honky-tonk, a splash of bluegrass, and a dash of hobo folk. Don’t forget your chairs, blankets and coolers for these outdoor shows!

There are even more individual acts in that same general genre. The Wilders are playing from 6-9pm on Monday, August 6th in the backyard at the Bonzer Shack and also on Saturday the 11th out back at the Outer Banks Brewing Station from 5-8:30pm. This local treasure’s repertoire consists of acoustic blues, old country and classic rock. If acoustic rock and country is your thing, you should also check out Natalie Wolfe at the Brewing Station on Thursday, August 9th. Natalie has some of the best vocals on the beach.

Looking to add some fitness to your vacation? This is also the perfect week to kick off your flip-flops and lace up your running shoes. There are plenty of summer race series you can try. On Wednesday, August 8th, the Lighthouse 5k Race Series features a summer morning 5k run/walk through the Historic Village of Corolla Light. Enjoy the sights of the Northern Outer Banks with the Whalehead Club, Corolla Light and the Currituck Beach Lighthouse all along the course. There are also a couple race options on Thursday morning. The OBX Splash & Dash is an open water Run, Swim, Run event at Jennette’s Pier in Nags Head. The course is a short run, then a 400 meter ocean swim, finishing with a 5k. Runners or walkers can also choose the Nags Head Beach 5k or casual 1-Miler also at Jennette’s Pier. Walk-up registration is available on-site on the early morning of all these races.

Our event of the week is the 29th Annual Alice Kelly Memorial Ladies Only Billfish Tournament this weekend, August 11th & 12th out of Pirate’s Cove Marina. 29 years ago a group of Alice Kelly’s friends came together to honor her memory and financially assist Interfaith Community Outreach Cancer Support. Today the “Alice Kelly” is one of the most popular lady angler events on the East Coast. Join us for a good cause, incredible fun and some serious fishing! Registration and the Cookout for a Cure Kick Off Party is on Saturday and Fishing is on Sunday followed by the Awards Dinner and Dance.

In addition to those events, there is also stand-up comedy, The Lost Colony 6 nights a week, live music every night, and daily lunch & dinner specials to check out all across the Outer Banks.
